If you would like to submit an article for possible publication, please read the following guidelines and complete the form below.
ToGOTo has always aimed to ensure that Central Southern Africa is highlighted as a travel destination of choice. This area includes the Free State, Lesotho, Drakensburg, Northern Cape, South KZN, part of the Eastern Cape, and part of the North West, but may include features in provinces bordering this area.
Articles for ToGOTo must 100% tourism oriented, featuring local activities, products or places for tourists to visit, buy, or take part in; and should be able to be categorized as either Adventure, Life Style, Art, Craft, Culture, Environment, Heritage, nature or Travel.
Guidelines:
- Unless permitted otherwise by the editor, public should have access to any event or location mentioned in an article (e.g. rock paintings on private property). Clear directions and contact numbers should be supplied.
- ToGoTo articles should be informative, entertaining, interesting, and if academic, at least understandable to the lay reader.
- The style of ToGoTo is informal yet elegant; free, yet well constructed; humorous (when called for), yet restrained.
- Allowing for individual styles, authors should adhere to the classic three-part structure of:
- Beginning (where the reader is given the Who, What, Where and When immediately and captivatingly)
- Middle (where the bulk of the story is developed, allowing for limited digressions) and
- End (where the main points are recapped and the article culminates in an inspiring flourish).
- In addition to the main body text, authors may provide extra, succinct side-lines; typically an interesting point, or information not falling strictly within the articles ambit, but adds piquancy to the article and can fit into a separate box.
- Articles should be between 600 and 1200 words long. Any departure from this must be cleared with the editor, beforehand.
- Although articles written in the third person are preferred, personal experiences are accepted if the use of first person pronoun is used in moderation.
- An author's eligibility to the use of title or institutional recognition should be referred to the publisher. By its nature, ToGoTo places the emphasis on the area it covers, embracing environment/ culture / heritage rather than personalities.
- ToGOTo is objective; it does not support controversial subjects or personal viewpoints; neither does it publish promotional material or articles dealing with political or environmental campaigns. It does not publish investigative journalism. Articles should be constructive, and portray the subject matter in a favourable light.
- All articles are submitted entirely at the author’s own risk. No undertaking can be given prior to going to print that any article, whether unsolicited or commissioned, will be published. Articles are tendered under condition that the publishers may edit, alter or omit part or all of the text. Major editing will not be undertaken without prior consultation with the author.
- By submitting any material for publication the author, artist or photographer permits the publishers to publish it in any medium, including print and electronic media, at any time, at no additional remuneration.
- As ToGoTo is an English language magazine, preference will be given to articles in English. Any departure from this should be cleared with the editor beforehand.
- No article that is not a bona fide advertorial may promote a business enterprise or institution in ways venturing beyond exploring subject matter as per the guidelines given here.
- Articles must be submitted in 'Word' format, either via e-mail, or on CD per courier to our office at author’s own cost. No formatting may be done.
- Supporting photographs must be high quality JPEG images of at least 300 definition. Photographs must be numbered, with written captions, and the name of the photograph provided.
- The following must accompany submission of any material for publication:
- Full contact details of the author, including banking details.
- Captions to the photographs with correctly spelt names and in correct sequence;
- Directions from major routes on how to reach the subject of the article;
- If copyrighted material is included, written clearance in the original must accompany the submission;
- By submitting articles for consideration and probable publication, the author automatically permits the publishers, Tourism Opt (SA) (PTY) Ltd, to publish the submitted material as listed here in any medium, whether print or electronic or other, at any time and for any duration in the future. The author warrants that the work is original and executed by the author without infringement of any copyright.
- Payment will be made by electronic transfer 30 days after publication. Remuneration will be calculated on the number of words published, the scales of which are available at the publisher's offices. Articles not published will not be paid for.
- Submission deadlines for the respective issues of the magazine are available at contact number Tel (0)58 303 5115.
